Assessment for High Schools

All academic learning culminates in the inevitable measuring tool – examination. In keeping with this norm, the school conducts three tests and three terminal examinations during an academic year as per the pre-decided schedule. Not all the acquired skills can be tested with the same format of testing. Each subject they learn help nurture certain skills and awareness. Accordingly, different techniques and activities are used to assess the students’ abilities, in keeping with CBSE's directives.

English

Debates, impromptu speech, conducting an interview and recording it, role play - these activities develop student speaking skills. Students are also assessed as per their abilities when they perform. Similarly their writing skills are put to test in the articles, brochures, autobiographies, and book reviews they write. Overall, each activity helps in assessing a student’s spoken and written skills continuously during the academic year.

Second and Third Languages

Activities are designed to improve students’ conversational skills in the second and third languages. Students explore the cultural relevance of the lessons and also review the histories of eminent literary personalities and their contributions to that particular language. In the process, students develop a sense of awareness about the socio-cultural significance of literature. Debates, impromptu speech and essay writing on various topics are used for assessment.

Mathematics

Through creatively designed projects, skills like estimation, collection, and analysis and interpretation of data and graphical representation are inculcated and tested. Students working as teams take up these activities, record their observations and present their work. They are assessed based on the effective method adopted, accuracy of recording and creative presentation.

Social Studies

The main aim of a social studies project is to help a student to develop civic awareness. Student teams study social issues of a community, prevalent laws pertaining to it, and infer their effectiveness. They express these through creatively designed posters, charts, street plays and so on. The skills assessed are creativity, collection, analysis and interpretation of data, their understanding of the issue and the ability to come up with novel suggestions.

Science

Precision, accuracy and judgment are tested while students perform experiments in the laboratory. The scientific knowledge and concept clarity are tested through viva voce on a regular basis. Students undertake simple projects using scientific method and extend their learning to real life. Their analytical and application skills are thus assessed.

CBSE Class X Board Examination

The Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) Board conducts the annual examinations in the month of March at the end of Class X. The Board issues qualifying certificates for the same. The core-curriculum at the secondary or Class X stage comprises of the study of languages, mathematics, science and social science as the subjects of external assessment.

English and languages are for 100 marks each and internal assessment is part of the assessment process in mathematics, science and social science. The mathematics final term paper in Class IX and X is set for 80 marks. Twenty marks are reserved for internal assessment (based on activity work and project work). Social Science for classes IX and X is set for 80 marks and 20 marks is allotted for other activities--- tests (10 marks), project work (5 marks), and assignments (5 marks). The science examination consists of a theory paper (60 marks), a separate multiple choice paper on practical skills in science and technology (20 marks) and internal assessment during practical classes (20 marks).

Physical and Health Education, Art Education and Work Experience are studied and continuously assessed internally by the school.

In high school, children are used to formal tests and examinations apart from other summative and formative assessments. Due weightage is given to all tests, examinations, internal assessments and projects when we finalise the final report of the child at the end of each term. One interesting part of our assessment is awarding grades for non-scholastic subjects for each term. We also have another section called Personality traits and Behaviour where we observe children in various areas like cleanliness, attitude towards friends and teachers, and interaction in class and so on.
