Band

Music is a wordless search, for beauty is Sound” – by Jawaharlal Nehru.

Music and Sports might seem like poles apart but at Kumarans, there is an excellent Brass band group that is being trained every year. This compulsory project for VI and VII students every Monday and Wednesday adds rhythm and beat to our Annual Sports meets and Installation ceremonies every year.

Band display is an integral part of Sports Day and the children participate in various school-band competitions.

Hands On Science

The excitement of doing science comes from pursuing the unknown and more so when they do it hands-on. Working in the lab gives the students an opportunity to explore beyond their text books to satisfy their inquisitive nature and tap the scientific temper in them. The conceptual understanding is complete when they experience what they learn.

The school is well equipped with Physics, Chemistry and Biology Labs, which caters to the National Curriculum Framework. Laboratories have been given a central and distinctive role in science education. Science facilitators in our institution feel that there are rich benefits in learning by doing.

The main objectives that may be achieved are:

  • Manipulative – inquiry, investigative skills
  • Cognitive – critical thinking, application, analysis, synthesis
  • Attitudinal – curiosity, interest, objectivity, confidence, collaboration

In Classes IV to VIII, concepts are reinforced by conducting demonstrations of the experiments for the young enthusiastic minds.

Art

Art is one of the most expressive and popular mediums known to mankind. In order to foster creativity, enhance aesthetic values and allow a free expression of ideas, children are introduced to drawing and painting at a very young age in our school. Pottery also is an integral part of our curriculum for classes I to V.

Based on the CBSE requirements, the school has drawn out a detailed programme of work for all classes from lower primary to high school.

In middle school, various mediums of colours and textures is experimented by the children to nurture their innate qualities. As they graduate from middle school, their creativity takes a step forward with a deep understanding of the tonal values of colours and textures.

Kumarans believes in the holistic development of children and to encourage children who have an artistic appeal and expression, a cover page design competition is organised in the school. The best designs of the year are used for the cover page of our notebooks, workbooks and school diary. In order not to stifle their creativity, we generally encourage students to do whatever they want but we would appreciate it if their drawing or painting has a message to the student fraternity.

Students also represent the school in various inter-school competitions like collage, greeting card making, painting and creating art out of waste, and have been winning lot of prizes for school. Apart from accolades, it helps to bring out their creative instincts through colours.

Apart from the regular drawing classes children are also given other options to join art classes which are conducted by professionals during hobby classes. Extended work like mask making, glass painting, chittara art and ceramic works have been introduced where students are given hands on experience.

Swimming

Children of Class IV have swimming as a compulsory sport under the aegis of the Basavangudi Aquatic Centre. The school ferries these children in the school bus during school hours for about an hour of swimming either on Thursday or Friday. Under trained coaches, the children are introduced to the life-saving sport. Talented children are identified and their parents are informed, so that they may pursue it during their leisure time in the following years.

Hobby Classes

In an age when gizmos or gadgets rule the roost, individual creative time and creativity have faded into oblivion. Keeping this in mind, Kumarans focuses on giving students an opportunity to stimulate their creativity by introducing them to hobby clubs right from standard IV. The students opt for a club of their choice and are trained by our very own talented, enthusiastic teachers. From having the pleasure of creating things with their own hands to excelling in dishing out mouth-watering delicacies, from graceful dancing to extempore speech our students are trained in all of these and more. The Hobby clubs at this level form the baby steps we take to identify budding stars whom we can nurture in the higher classes by professionals.

Life Skill Classes

Objective of the program
An educational degree alone cannot guarantee success for an individual in life. In addition to it what is required is a personality that will enable an individual to handle various situations in life. The program on life skills being conducted in Sri Kumaran Children's Home is a definite step in this direction. This program is for classes IV and V.

Standard IV
The program on life skills basically aims at equipping the students with various skills which will help them face life and its hurdles more confidently. The medium of development is stories, based on which students hone various skills like listening, group discussion, presentation and dramatization.

Standard V
The theme is a Better “ME” for a better community. Activities are presented that help students identify leaders in various strata of society and through this we help children enhance their listening skills and provide opportunities for group discussion.

Enrichment Activities For Class 7

In the final year of middle school, class VII children are involved in a few extra curricular activities to sensitize them towards nature and society and also develop various skills related to day to day life. To enhance the above mentioned skills different sections of class VII take up different activities:

VII A -- Heritage Club
VII B -- Vermi composting
VII C -- Bala Janagraha

Heritage Club : Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH)

The world heritage committee is working to make sure that future generations can inherit the treasures of the past. And yet, most sites face a variety of threats, particularly in today’s environment. The preservation of this common heritage concerns us all.

For the students of class VII, our school has started a heritage club, in association with INTACH –Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. Teacher-coordinators and children are working under the able guidance of Architect Pratibha, Director, Bangalore chapter of INTACH.

According to this programme the goals of students are:

  • Integration of heritage and learning to care.
  • Development of observational skills and creative expressions.
  • First hand experience of our natural and cultural heritage through adopting a heritage site.

Vermicomposting:

People are suffering from various diseases due to the increase in chemicals used in the field of agriculture. To counteract this problem there is an increase in the awareness of the benefits of organic farming. Vermicomposting involves generating organic manure in a scientific way from the bio-resources that are considered as waste.

To bring about awareness at an early age, we have taken up the project of Vermicomposting for a group of class VII students. To start with, students drew inspiration from our guest speaker Dr. Radha D. Kale, Ph.D., M.N.A.SC (India), who is globally recognized as earthworm scientist. Dr.Radha enlightened the students about the advantages and procedures involved in vermicomposting.

As a part of the action plan for this academic year, students will collect bio-degradable wastes not only from school, but also from their residential areas for vermicomposting. Apart from this, they will also be taken on a field trip to Karnataka Compost Development Corporation, Bangalore, to know more about vermicomposting.

These small but conscious steps taken by the school will help children to be more sensitive towards the environment.

Bala Janaagraha

To bring in awareness about civic amenities and also citizens’ role in the local administration, our VII-graders are part of the Bala Janaagraha movement .We work very closely with Ms Rama Errabelli, Coordinator of Bala Janaagraha.

Bala Janaagraha is the youth wing of the Janaagraha movement under the flagship of Mr. Ramesh Ramanathan, Ms Swathi Ramanathan and team.

The main work is to bring in peoples’ participation in local administration. The children have a session once a week where in they theoretically learn about local administrators, facilities they should look for in their areas, people who are responsible in providing the amenities so on.

Students work on a different project each year and this gives them valuable practical experience. The project has to be completed by January and presented to the core team of Bala Janaagraha. The schools are graded based on their report submission and presentation.

A teacher trained by Bala Janaagraha handles the classes and guides the students in the day to day working of the project.
